Check out some frequently asked questions we get about searching on hiihat.
Trust us, it’s life changing.
What is hiihat?
hiihat is a discovery platform on a mission to make the search for all things Black more useful, social, and equal. In laymen terms, we are a search engine.
Why does hiihat exist?
It’s a hassle to find all things Black in one place. When you’re on the hunt for talent or professionals, news, products and services created by Black people – Black-owned directories and marketplaces, as well as the world’s most popular search engines barely touch the surface.
Search engines help us find stuff. We trust these platforms, our closest friends, colleagues, and loved ones when we need recommendations or help with research.
We decided to create a micro search engine that can send you straight to an accurate source of what you’re looking for fast, increasing the chances of you purchasing or patronizing Black as well as circulating your dollar much faster and longer.
Most of all, we are also saving you time.
Why is there an image on the homepage?
Black art, across all mediums, has commonly been stolen and under-appreciated for centuries. It’s our goal at hiihat, that our homepage serves as a canvas for Black artists to showcase their art and make money from that exposure. The homepage artist changes monthly, with images changing anywhere from monthly to weekly.
Click the black circle in the bottom right corner of the homepage to learn more about the artist and purchase their art.
How does hiihat make money?
Like all commercial search engines, we make money when a user searches and then clicks on a paid search ad on the search results page. The only difference? Our ads are for Black businesses onlu
Is hiihat a non-profit?
No. We are an LLC, owned by a Black woman. =D
How can I add hiihat to my browser?
Great question! hiihat has a Google Chrome extension that makes it easy for you to search during your day-to-day browsing. Download the extension, free of charge, here.
We will create more extensions for other browsers accordingly!
Who started hiihat?
Our founder is Ngozi Ahanotu. She started hiihat.com because she got tired of having to use so many different avenues to shift her life to 80% black-owned. She has always and continues to be committed to telling Black stories, amplifying Black voices, loving Black people, and living Black life better.
hiihat.com was built and is operated by Black software developers. The homepage is curated by Cymphoni Laster, a Black art curator and fashion designer.
hiihat is a privately held business registered by Culture Moves Concept Group, LLC in Atlanta, GA.
How does hiihat search work?
Our platform helps you search the web based on search queries, also known as ‘keywords“.
Our technology crawls thousands of websites on a daily and weekly basis, then parses through the information to remove poor and unclear information. Lastly, our technology indexes the remaining information and its accompanying links into a database. When you search, our search engine combs through the index to find the best results and most suitable answers for you. For accuracy and relevance, we limit the number of results you receive.
Something else you should know, we aren’t equipped to answer questions. Sorry.
The field of search engines is very complex and costly. Here’s an article on How Internet Search Engines Work.
Why am I seeing ads when I search?
Most search engines show ads next to their search results. If a user clicks on one of these ads, the search engine is being paid for having directed the user to the advertiser’s site. In hiihat’s case, we currently receive 100% of our profits from search ad revenue and ultimately it returns to the Black community.
Our founder at hiihat.com is not currently taking a salary.
What sites do you crawl?
We crawl Black-founded and Black-owned databases, marketplaces, news sites, local service websites, e-commerce sites, listservs and more.
Why do you only index Black-founded and Black-owned sites?
With respect to our elders, ancestors, aunties, etc. that busted their behinds to create a business then sell it for any reason, these same companies likely employ Black people and create wealth in the Black community in some way. Respectfully, they deserve to still be patronized.
Are my searches private?
Do you collect my personal data?
Why use hiihat search instead of Amazon, Google or something else?
We fully recognize that you can’t beat Google when it comes to online search. It’s not our intention to become a ‘Black’ Google either.
hiihat is a platform you can trust to give you links that belong to Black-founded and Black-owned company websites when you search. This helps you get to what you’re looking for easier, make a purchase or share, ultimately circulating the dollar in the Black community faster and longer. It is a great supplement to Amazon, Walmart, CNN, etc.
What if I cannot find what I’m looking for?
We acknowledge that for some search queries you might not always find what you’re looking for; however, you’re welcome to use other platforms if you cannot find what you’re looking for.
Using hiihat as your default search engine when you are looking to buy a product, use a service, read the news, or go down rabbit holes, we are still the best way to circulate your dollar in the Black community. It’s really that simple.
Do I need to sign in to search?
Can I personalize my search?
How do I open a search result in a new page?
You can thank our Lead Developer, Bam, because he went ahead and did this for you!
However, if you still have trouble with it, here’s how to make it happen. If would like to open a page or an image in a new tab right from the search result page, you have two easy options:
- Using the keyboard shortcut
Simply hold the ctrl and the alt/option key and left click on the image you would like to open in a new tab. The image will open in a new tab next to the one you are currently using Ecosia with.
Right click on the image and choose “open image in new tab”. However, some browsers don’t offer this function, so the keyboard shortcut probably is the easiest to go by.
Do unicorns fly?
Black women do. 😉

How can I submit my site to be indexed?
